Muscle Shoals, ALABAMA— You did it.

You’re on your way to college, so you scope out the necessities: where to live, where to shop, and where to bank. You remember there’s a credit union on campus. It’s conveniently located, they seem with-it, and they’ve got students like you working there. Now the only thing left on your mind is locating the nearest Starbucks.

Oh wait – it’s only three steps away from the credit union.

According to Listerhill Vice President of Marketing Kristen Mashburn, Listerhill Credit Union committed in 2010 to a gift to The University of North Alabama (UNA) to assist in the construction of their latest construction project, a new student commons and academic resource center. In exchange for a gift of more than $625,000, Listerhill was guaranteed a premium location inside the state-of-the-art building for its newest on-campus branch, The Hill.

Just last year, Mashburn said Listerhill also provided support to The University through its development of the One Card, a combined card that has all of the features of UNA’s Mane Card but that also gives students or campus staff access to their Listerhill accounts.

“We’re proud not only to offer this new branch, but we’re also excited about the many ways students can benefit from the holistic approach we have taken in our partnership with The University,” said Mashburn. “What makes this branch so special is that it allows students and faculty the choice of how they would like to interact with us while also being conducive to efficient service.”

The Commons at UNA, just like at most any university, serves as the heart of campus life. The Hill branch is the centerpiece, surrounded by Starbucks Coffee, Chick-Fil-A, Frostbite Frozen Yogurt and the UNA Bookstore. The Hill’s modern design and wall-less construction make it impossible to ignore. In the center of the branch is a seating area for more than a dozen students, making it ideal for an impromptu study session or social gathering. On one side of the branch are two charging stations where students can pull out their laptops and devices to get homework done or just stop by to charge up.

With two member service stations, The Hill’s fully-trained students, or Financial Gurus, assist their peers during business hours. After hours, a sleekly-designed Smart-ATM can assist students by accepting deposits or making withdrawals, allowing the open-design branch to truly always be open.

The Hill would not be complete without Listerhill’s Director of Financial Literacy, who manages the branch and provides additional resources to students. Matthew Van Ormer, who serves as Director of Financial Literacy, helps guide students on a one-to-one basis as well as teaches a Financial Literacy course to classes and student organizations.

“We’re very pleased to be able to offer The Hill branch as a way for our members to interact with us and each other in a modern but welcoming environment,” said Van Ormer. “It’s also very meaningful for Listerhill to be able to share our passion for promoting financial literacy to students at an important point in their lives.”

“Our branch at UNA is a great representation of how Listerhill focuses on creating positive experiences for our members”, said Brad Green, President/CEO of Listerhill Credit Union.  “There is a constant need to use technology and design not only to enhance the service experience, but also to promote financial literacy while serving our members’ everyday needs.”
