Muscle Shoals, ALABAMA—With each passing year, The Big Deal event at the University of North Alabama (UNA) just keeps getting bigger.

It might be because Listerhill Credit Union gives away a free car.

The Big Deal is the University’s official welcome for all incoming students and is an outdoor, festival-style event featuring representatives from student organizations and vendors in addition to live performances.

Since 2010, Listerhill has worked with the University to provide an additional incentive for students to attend the opening week event. Once again, Listerhill highlighted The Big Deal this year by hosting a car giveaway for all accountholders of The Hill. Current members who registered for the drawing or those signing up for a new account on the night of The Big Deal were eligible to win a Listerhill-red 2012 Chevrolet Cruze.

“The Big Deal is one of the most exciting events we take part in every year,” said Listerhill Vice President of Marketing Kristen Mashburn. “We look forward to this even more so than the students.”

Mashburn said there is a reason that Listerhill places so much emphasis on its support of the University.

“Listerhill is committed to being wherever the students need us,” said Mashburn.  “Whether that is at orientation, move-in day, or at school-wide campus events, we’re going to be there and add value to the event.”

“It makes a big difference when you are able to reach students on their level and in their environment,” said Director of Financial Literacy Matthew Van Ormer, who also manages Listerhill’s branch on UNA’s campus.  “When they are able to see Listerhill’s interaction with their school, it makes them more comfortable trusting us to help them with their finances.”

At The Big Deal, three students were selected by random drawing and each received a gift bag to open in front of the crowd of nearly 1,500 students. UNA student and Hill member Jade Johnson had the bag with the keys inside and won the Chevy Cruze.

“I didn’t think my bag had the keys,” said Johnson. “But I kept digging and finally found them at the bottom. I could only think, ‘Oh my gosh, this can’t be real.’”

“There are very few financial institutions in the country that have the supportive relationship Listerhill does with UNA,” said Brad Green, President/CEO of Listerhill Credit Union.  “We are the top corporate contributor to the university because we believe strongly in the financial literacy of its students and in their impact on this area’s future.”
