Helpful Hints for Finding Scholarships

Six quick hints to help you apply for scholarship opportunities in 2019!

The brink of freedom is near (sort of)! High school is almost over! It was a great chapter, but you’re probably looking forward to new adventures. Here are some helpful hints to help you navigate the waters ahead when it comes to college and finding scholarships.

  1. Double-Check Application Requirements - Make sure to apply for scholarships that you're eligible for. Examine entry requirements before doing all that work and avoid unnecessary application fees.
  2. Don't Be Fooled By Size - Don’t forget the small scholarships. Most people overlook the smaller ones because they do not see the value in them. Their application process is usually simpler and requires less time which allows you to pursue more scholarship opportunities.
  3. Pull Out Your Dictionary - When researching scholarship opportunities, use words people do not normally think about such as Endowment, Foundation, Honorarium, Trust, Fellowship and Donors etc. This will present you with a wider range of application options.
  4. Notes, Notes, And More Notes - Keep a notebook or a spreadsheet of your scholarship searches, deadlines, and the progress status of each one. Your notes should also include the application cost, important contact information, and your personal notes about each application. The more organized you are, the easier it will be to apply to multiple scholarships.
  5. It's All About The Details - Make sure to fill out all the application blanks. This lets scholarship panels know that you pay close attention to detail. Do not handwrite your applications, unless otherwise specified. Applications need to be clear, professional, and legible.
  6. Never Hurts To Ask - Check with the college you are attending to see if there is any money available in the re-awards pot. After you have enrolled, ask the college about how to be considered for this award money.
