LCU Helps MDA Set Shamrock Fundraiser Record

Muscle Shoals, ALABAMA—Listerhill Credit Union members helped the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) complete its most successful Shamrocks Against Dystrophy fundraiser in the event’s 27 year history. According to the MDA, more than $20 million has been raised through the sale of $1 green and $5 gold shamrocks at participating retailers nationwide this year.

“We’re proud to have played a small role in MDA’s record-breaking fundraiser,” said Brad Green, President of Listerhill Credit Union. “Every year our employees engage in a friendly competition to see which branch can raise the most money for Jerry’s Kids. Although our Better Choice branch and Express Drive-thru on Woodward Avenue in Muscle Shoals raised the most money this year, the real winners are the children and adults who receive medical assistance and support from the funds raised.”

Listerhill’s 16 branches raised $4,438 for Shamrocks Against Dystrophy by collecting donations for green and gold paper shamrocks. Those who donated had the opportunity to write their name on a shamrock and have it displayed at the branch. The Better Choice branch and Express Drive-thru collected $833 in donations for MDA, nearly $100 more than any other Listerhill branch.

“The secret to our success was our team leader, Jordan Nielson. He went all out decorating for St. Patrick’s Day, holding a bake sale, and encouraging us to collect as many donations as possible. Although we’re one of the smaller branches, our team effort helped us raise the most money,” explained Rhonda McCoy, senior teller at the Better Choice branch and Express Drive-thru.

Contributions collected during the fundraiser will help local children and adults affected by any of the 43 diseases for which MDA provides treatment. North Alabama residents benefit from free monthly visits to MDA clinics at The Children’s Hospital in Birmingham and the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, a medical equipment loan program, assistance with durable medical equipment repairs and support groups.

A portion of local Shamrock donations is also used to send children from North Alabama to Camp ASCCA one week each summer, explained Jennifer Elliott, Executive Director of the MDA office in Huntsville. The fully handicap-accessible camp allows children affected by disease to enjoy a fun summer camp experience with children facing similar challenges.

“‘People helping people’ has long been the credit union motto,” explained Deanna
Flippo, Business Development Coordinator at Listerhill Credit Union. “Helping MDA is a great
way to have fun at work and make a difference in our community.”
